Junior's CAASPP Testing Notification

Every year, California students take several statewide tests. When combined with other measures such as grades, class work, and teacher observations, these tests give families and teachers a more complete picture of their child’s learning. You can use the results to identify where your child is doing well and where they might need more support.
Albany High School Juniors will be given the computer-based California Science Test (CAST) and Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBAC) the week of March 30th. The school schedule for that week is attached. The CAST exam will test student knowledge of the California Next-Generation Science Standards (CA NGSS), and the SBAC exam (ELA and Math portions) will test student knowledge of the California Common Core State Standards. CAASPP tests are given statewide and provide an opportunity to measure the skills of all students against the same academic standards. The results provide information Albany High can use to improve coursework. Students can benefit from the SBAC, as their results can help determine a student's placement after they have been admitted to a California State University. Also, a student's SBAC ELA results can be used in determining their eligibility for the State Seal of Biliteracy in their senior year.
Albany High School’s Academic Indicator Scores are affected by low participation! The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires all schools to test at least 95 percent of all students and student groups in English language arts/literacy (ELA), mathematics, and science. Any school group with less than 95 percent of students tested, the ESSA requires a penalty to be applied to the Academic Indicator. To meet this federal requirement, California will assign the Lowest Obtainable Scale Score (LOSS) to each student needed to bring the participation rate of the school, district, and/or student group to 95 percent. The LOSS assigned to each of these students who did not test will be used in calculating the Distance from Standard (DFS). Students who did not test will not receive a LOSS on their individual California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) student score reports or in the CAASPP Student Score Data File.
