Nationwide Shutdown This Friday—Schools Open

Dear Families,
As you may be aware, there has been a call for a Nationwide Shutdown on January 30 in response to concerns about ICE activity across the country. The call encourages “no work, no school, and no shopping.” While families make decisions that are best for their own children, we want to share that Albany Unified School District schools will be open and operating as usual that day.
As a public school district, we are required to follow the California Education Code regarding attendance. The relevant provision applies only to middle and high school students and allows for one excused absence per school year for participation in a civic or political event, provided the school is notified in advance (Education Code 48205).
Outside of this specific provision, absences must be marked as unexcused. Please note that the district does not receive funding for students who are absent, regardless of the reason.
We recognize that these are difficult and uncertain times, and we respect families' right to make decisions they believe are best for their children and families. Our commitment remains to provide a safe, welcoming, and supportive learning environment for all students every day.
Sincerely,
