1000+ Followers on Instagram

posted Apr 7, 2016, 8:33 AM by AHS Webmaster
Do you know that Albany High School has an Instagram account with over 1000 followers? Not bad for our small community. The account is managed by Ned Purdom's Journalism class. In just under two years, they have built an active and fun place for AHS students to smile, strut and share. Be sure to follow along at @albanyhighca.

Starting today, our Instagram photos also show up on the main Albany High School website. It might seem like a simple thing, but it's been on our wish list for years. Our website is built using Google Sites, which provides a lot of useful functionality for free, but makes customization particularly hard. It might not look like anything special on the site, but getting those images there really stretched our programming cleverness.

This summer, we're redoing the entire website to better suit the needs of our users. Our tracking analytics show that much of the information people want on the current site is buried two or more clicks away from the homepage. We're going to fix that, and a lot more:
  • add easy access to bell schedules, Aeries and commonly-used forms
  • create a prominent list of courses we offer, with links to those courses that offer websites
  • create larger, separate homepage calendars for sports and general events
  • create a section for families new to AHS
    • daily news email sign-up
    • aeries registration
    • free/reduced lunch registration
  • integrate articles from the Journalism class with the homepage design
  • decrease the width of text-heavy pages (like this one!) to increase readability
