In the ninth and tenth grades, students continue to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the earlier grades but in more refined and sophisticated ways. In some cases standards address new goals, such as mastering appropriate interviewing techniques. Regardless, emphasis continues to be centered on analyzing literature in greater depth, analyzing career-related and other informational discourse, completing more complex writing assignments, and giving more extensive oral presentations.


The standards for the eleventh and twelfth grades are the pinnacle of all the standards for the language arts. Most of the standards at this level are sophisticated extensions of the knowledge and skills previously targeted in the earlier grades. They highlight several interrelationships among the different domains of language arts: reading, writing, written and oral English language conventions, and speaking and listening.
