Preparing for College Applications

Transcript Requests

To request an official transcript, please provide a stamped envelope addressed to the college or organization requiring the transcript. Do not include your return address; the transcript will be mailed from Albany High. Note that we cannot provide official transcripts directly to students or parents. Please allow adequate time for mailing. Seniors: if you are requesting the transcript as part of your college applications, please refer to the Naviance for College Applications information below.

Albany High School Alumni: please see Lara Javier in the Main Office for all transcript requests. There is a $2 fee per transcript for alumni. Please allow 2-3 business days for transcripts to be mailed.

College Visits

Students who want to learn more about private and public colleges from both far and near need only come to the Counseling Office and sign-up to meet with an admissions representative. This can help students develop a sense of what life might be like for them at a particular school.

Naviance for College Applications

All AHS students have individual Naviance accounts where they can conduct college searches and easily access information such as acceptance rates, majors offered and application deadlines.  This year, the Counseling Department will be using Naviance eDocs to manage the college application process, from adding schools to your list to tracking deadlines and submitting required materials to colleges. eDocs works together with the Common App and other types of application and is a great organizational tool for students and parents. Instructions for using Naviance to manage the college application process were passed out in senior classes in mid-September and can be found here: Instructions for Managing College Applications

Information about eDocs, as well as tips on how to do college research and build a list of colleges to apply to will be given by Counselors at College Application Information Night on September 14th at 7:00 p.m. in the Little Theater.

College Application Information Night Notes

Secondary School Report/Counselor Letter of Recommendation Packet 

This packet is for use by students applying to colleges that require a secondary school report to be completed by their counselor, and for those who will need letters of recommendation from their counselor/teachers for private colleges, out-of state colleges, and some scholarship applications. The UCs and CSUs do not require a letter of recommendation.

Counselors ask that the following packet to be completed and turned in by posted deadlines for any student applying to colleges that require a secondary school report (all Common App colleges) and for counselor letters of recommendation for scholarships. Please note that counselor letters are often NOT counted toward the number of letters of recommendation colleges require. Students applying to colleges that require teacher letters of recommendation should ask teachers early and in person. Sending request to a teacher through Naviance should not be done unless you've already secured that teacher's agreement to write on your behalf.

The brag sheets and profile are designed to provide your counselor and/or teachers with more information about your high school experience for use in letters of recommendation, but they are also great for jogging your memory about the activities and accomplishments you'll want to include in your applications.

Social Security Disclaimer form: If you plan to apply for financial aid for next year (including for 4-year college, community college or vocational school), we strongly recommend that you provide your student’s social security number, as requested on the attached form.  Every 12th grader must return this form.

*The institution you're applying for may offer various waivers, please visit each school's website directly for the most up-to-date information.

Cal Grant GPA Verification Form

Attention Seniors, it has been brought to our attention that we are no longer able to access social security numbers in Aeries. This field was recently deleted as a means to protect your identity. As a result, we are not able to submit your Cal Grant information electronically as we have in previous years. We do however have a solution for you. Attached to this email is the Cal Grant GPA Verification Form that is provided by the California Student Aid Commission. Please complete your portion and turn it into the Counseling Office. We will then complete the bottom half of the document and submit it via certified mail. Hard copies are also available to students in the Counseling Office and of the AHS website under the Counseling tab and then look for Preparing for College Applications. Please Note: This document is used for students planning to attend community college, 4-year universities and vocational programs and is required in order to be considered for Cal Grant financial aid.

The DEADLINE to turn in the form is Friday, January 6th to the Counseling Office.

AHS A-G Lists for UC's and CSU's

The University of California A-G (A through G) requirements outline high school courses designated by the Academic Senate of the University of California as appropriate for fulfilling the minimum eligibility requirements for admission to the University of California. It also illustrates the minimum level of academic preparation students ought to achieve in high school to undertake university level work.

2016 Cash for College Workshop - Albany High

This event is designed to help college-bound seniors and their parents understand and complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This workshop is FREE!

Filing the FAFSA is the first step in most financial aid searches. Please be aware that your FAFSA must be filed by March 2 in order for you to be eligible for a Cal Grant.

What you need to bring for the Cash for College workshop:
*Come to the Cash for College workshop with the following documents (that apply to you):
  1.  Driver’s license, if you have one
  2.  Social Security Card or number, if you have one
  3.  Alien registration number, if you have one
  4.  Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) – yours or your parents’
  5.  Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) number, if you have one
  6.  List of colleges you are interested in attending
  7.  NEW THIS YEAR – The FAFSA and CADAA applications will utilize your 2015 tax and income information to apply for 2017-18 student aid. While completing the FAFSA, you will use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) to populate your 2015 tax information. No need to bring tax and income information UNLESS YOU HAVE NOT FILED 2015 TAXES.
If you have not filed your 2015 taxes, you will need the following documents to complete the
FAFSA and CADAA applications:
  •  2015 income information
  •  Parents’ 2015 income information
  •  2014 tax information
  •  Parents’ 2014 tax information
  •  2015 bank statements
  •  Parents’ 2015 bank statements
  •  Any records of untaxed income such as welfare benefits, Social Security benefits, or child support payments
NOTE: You must use 2015 income and tax information to apply for financial aid for the 2017-18
academic year. If your financial situation has changed since 2015 for the worst, you should
follow-up with the institution you are applying to attend.
